Booster pumps are used to export oil production from gathering stations to main processing facilities, over long distances. Initially, Twin Screw Pumps (TSP) were installed. High sand cut combined with high operating speed caused internal wear due to abrasion and subsequent loss of efficiency, and frequent failure of the pump’s multiple mechanical seals. This culminated in frequent production shutdown and high maintenance costs. The MTBF of 2-3 months left the Operator with no choice but to consider an alternative pump solution in its search for reliability.
Polymer flooding is an Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) technique that targets improved volumetric sweep efficiency of water flooding. The process involves the preparation of polymer solutions at the surface and injecting them into the reservoir. High shear forces can break down the polymer chains, reducing their effectiveness. Polymer solutions must be carefully prepared and handled. They are very viscous before final dilution. The pumps used to transfer the solutions need to avoid shearing the polymer and be able to handle high viscosity.
Closed Drains Systems on offshore platforms collect hazardous waste fluids and spillage. The fluids are collected and stored in a drum to prevent contamination of surrounding sea water. The installation containing the hydrocarbon waste has a high vapor pressure has less than 0.5m (1.5 ft) NPSH available. A pump with ultra low NPSH requirement is needed to periodically empty the drum.
Wash tanks are very large liquid/liquid gravity separators generally installed on onshore oil production sites. In an innovative approach to reduce the size and weight of separation modules on the FPSO (Floating Production Storage and Offloading units) topsides, wash tank units were constructed inside the FPSO hull for water-in-oil separation and desalting. After separation, all the fluids need to be transferred for appropriate treatment downstream.
